Horsemen Fred Grant was honoured this past Thanksgiving Day long weekend when he was enshrined into Northside Sports Hall of Fame in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Grant, a native of North Sydney, was inducted into the hall under the ‘builders’ category. He was inducted along with athletes Peggy Daye (tennis), Mike Doyle (boxing), Russ Gordon (baseball), Lorne Jennex (golf), Bill Gillis (baseball), and the 1966-67 Sydney Mines Ten Pennies, Maritime intermediate hockey champions, which was inducted under the ‘team’ category.
As explained in an article by the Cape Breton Post, Grant began his Standardbred racing career in North Sydney before racing on the sport’s biggest tracks both north and south of the border.
Grant now resides in Florida, the state in which he worked with the great hall of famer Stanley Dancer. Most remember Grant for his success with the lightning-fast Cambest, who in 1993 scorched a time trial in 1:46.1 at the Illinois State Fair.
Grant had found much success while racing at Blue Bonnets in Montreal and at the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey, where he racked up scores of wins, including the 1984 edition of the half-million-dollar New Jersey Classic with Markims Pride.
