Gurf Upsets In Dover Open Trot

Impeccably bred Gurf scored a 7-1 upset victory in the 26,000 Open Trot at Dover Downs on Wednesday, Nov. 3

Corey Callahan sped Gurf quickly past Nordic Venture in mid-backstretch and then opened up an impressive lead on the way to a 1:56.2 triumph in the top weekly trot.

The Self Possess-Tasty Chip five-year-old was claimed early last meet after an injury-riddled four-year-old campaign. Rosemary Smuts trains the gelding for Daivd Nelson. He now has won six times this year earning $86,980.

Spunky Vic came home fast for Tony Morgan with Fivedollarsforsox (George Dennis) finishing third.

Tony Morgan driving Man O Matic found the passing lane to his advantage nipping Batalj Launcher (Eric Goodell) in the last step for a 1:57.4 score in the $18,000 sub-feature trot. Owned by trainer Tom Clendening, Alex Sauicke and Brad Rathbone, the SJs Caviar-Whitney Royal gelding won for the fourth time lifting his seasonal earnings to $52,451. Nice Dream (Jim Morand) was the show finisher.
