American Passion was a double-digit upset winner two weeks ago in the $8,800 Fillies & Mares Open Pace at Northlands Park and she repeated that feat with another dominant wire-to-wire effort on Friday night with temperatures at a frigid -23 degrees Celsius.
Overcoming her outside post eight starting spot, American Passion established the lead early and carved out fractions of :28.4, :59.4 and 1:29.4 en route to the 1:59.3 triumph over the frozen track. The popular Travis Cullen stablemates Sing Like An Angel and Feelin Flush advanced from mid-pack on the outside, but couldn't catch the pacesetter, who widened her winning margin to four lengths in the homestretch.
American Passion, who was third to another Cullen trainee (Emmasphere) between wins last Friday, returned $24.40 to her backers tonight at odds of 11-1 and provided Gerry Hudon with his third win on the card as a trainer, driver and owner.
The four-year-old daughter of American Ideal has won three races this year, giving her a total of 11 in two seasons competing on track. Hudon's wife, Monica, and R. Lynn Kowalevsky also share ownership of the mare.
Hudon also won with his own pacers Cabo Real ($3.60) and Burn The House ($7), and closed out the program with one more victory driving Joe Ratchford trainee Shyster Hanover ($6.50).
