The gloves are coming off in the long-simmering feud between racetrack operator Attractions Hippiques and Loto-Québec
.
A day after Attractions Hippiques served notice it intends to sue Loto-Québec for forcing it into insolvency, the provincial gaming corporation fired back, opposing – successfully – a bid by the company to have its different business units consolidated for its final proposal to creditors.
Quebec Superior Court Judge Brian Riordan denied Attractions Hippiques’ request after a hearing today in Montreal, which means each of its eight corporate entities will have to make separate proposals to their individual creditors at meetings to be held during the week January 25-29.
The offer to all 1,400 creditors will be the same, a share of any proceeds from the lawsuit owner Paul Massicotte intends to launch against LoLoto-Québec and the provincial government.
Lawyer Neil Stein, representing the company, said making eight separate proposals would be an “administrative nightmare,” but Judge Riordan said he didn’t think it would be that bad.
Stein said he wasn’t surprised by Loto-Québec's opposition. “They will do everything they can to obstruct us along the way.”
