Unheralded Enrico As and driver Allan Davis pulled an 11-1 surprise to win the $18,000 Open Trot at Dover Downs on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Leaving from the rail, Enrico As took the early lead before yielding to race favourite Im So Striking and Eddie Dennis heading to the clubhouse turn. Trace Tetrick rushed Powerful Charger up to challenge and was head-to-head with Im So Striking nearing the three-quarters mark before Im So Striking regained the front. After turning from home, Davis taxied along the passing lane and the two dueled down the lane until Enrico As stuck his head out and took first money in a final time of 1:55 flat. I Like My Boss finished third for Jonathan Roberts.
Ken Wood, Bill Dittmar and Steve Iaquinta own Enrico As, an Allstar Hall-Caspian chestnut trained by Eric Ell. The win was the gelding’s fourth of the campaign raising his seasonal earnings to $57,260 and lifetime earnings to $228,788.
Corey Callahan and Picard were all alone in the stretch for a 1:56.1 victory in the $14,000 3,4&5-Year-Old Winners Over Trot sub-feature. It was Callahan’s third of four winning drives while his dad, Nick Callahan, posted his second training win on the card. Picard, a SJs Caviar-Tarsha Yar gelding, is owned by his trainer with Bonuccelli Racing. Wartech (Tony Morgan) was second in front of Themida (Brandon Hensley).
Vic Kirby and George Dennis had driving doubles.
Last week’s winner, Nova Artist, leads top pacers in the Thursday $25,000 Delaware Special. Monday through Thursday racing begins with a 4:30 p.m. post. There is no racing Friday and Saturday. Sunday Racing starts at 5:30 p.m.
