Update On Steve Byron

After suffering the worst accident of his career, driver Steve Byron is approaching his return to the racebike.

In May, Byron suffered a fractured left knee and ligament damage in a qualifying race at Kawartha Downs, placing him on the sidelines for the summer. Byron required a plate and 12 screws in his tibia as a result of the accident.

"It's getting better; I've come a long way this last month," Byron told Trot Insider. "I've been doing physiotherapy and I got off the crutches about three weeks ago."

Byron has one more follow-up with his surgeon in December. If the surgeon gives him the thumbs-up, Byron plans to resume driving in January.

"Last time I saw the surgeon they said 'don't push it'," said Byron, who was unable to put any weight on that leg for three and a half months.

"It's always going to ache with the scar tissue there. I just have to live with it. "

At least Byron has something to look forward to now that he's up and about. His brother Dave purchased a yearling at the Black Book Sale in Harrisburg and, given the pedigree, he's a likely partner.

"He bought a Deweycheatumnhowe filly out of Ally Hall," stated Byron. Ally Hall won the 2001 Oakville (now Peaceful Way) Final with Byron driving. "As far as I'm concerned, we stole her -- she was only $8,000...I told him I'd be interested in a piece of her."
