The fifth and final preliminary round of the Ford Summit Series for $6,000 claiming trotters kicked off on Saturday night at Georgian Downs with a 49-1 shocker.
Standford Bridge ($101.90), who had failed to find the winner's circle over the past four weeks with his latest effort marred by breaks, rallied home from mid-pack to prevail by three-quarters of a length in his $5,600 division over the favoured pacesetter Handsome Yankee in 1:58.4. Anthony Haughan drove the seven-year-old gelding for trainer A.J. Moore and Ontario owners Erin Appleby of Waterloo and James Player of Sebringville.
The upsets continued with Dan Clements driving Too Good Too Pass ($14.20) to a 2:00.2 triumph for trainer Mark Etsell and Northern Mistral ($9.80) to victory in 1:58.4 for trainer Marty Fine. Too Good Too Pass also scored his first win in the series while Northern Mistral notched his third.
Rageur Normand ($10.70), a winner last week, returned to victory lane during the fifth round with a 1:58.4 winning effort for driver Paul MacKenzie and trainer Kevin Tremblay.
Twin B Spike Man ($2.20), the only favourite to make it to the winner's circle in round five, romped to a nine length victory in 1:57.4 with Aaron Byron driving for Jeff Byron. He was claimed for $6,000 by Keith Jones of Midland, Ont. after winning three in a row for owner Edward Britton of Breslau, Ont.
The fifth leg of the pacing series will be held on Monday, November 19 followed by the finals on Saturday, November 24.
