A multi-horse collision occurred in Tuesday’s ninth race at Georgian Downs, with drivers Jonathan Drury and James MacDonald getting the worst of it

. Both reinsmen were ejected from their bikes as a result of a chain reaction spilled that started when Yakuza Hall made a break while challenging in the first-over position.

Tony Kerwood was at the lines of the trotter, who made a sudden break just before the field headed into the final turn. Randy Waples and Maple Point were right behind Yakuza Hall, and they were the first to be interfered with by the breaking horse. Waples was nearly knocked out of the bike, but he managed to stay aboard.

Jonathan Drury, who was sitting third-over with Sturdy Motion, got tangled up in Waples’ bike and was eventually ejected from his sulky when struck from behind by Young Pointer N and driver James MacDonald. Sturdy Motion galloped off without his pilot while Young Point N fell and dumped MacDonald out of the bike.

Trot Insider has learned that MacDonald and the horses involved were uninjured in the spill, but Drury booked off his final drive and was en route to hospital to be checked out for a sore lower back and hip.

"I went to the hospital last night and they said that there are no breaks but there is some bad bruising and some muscle and soft tissue damage in my lower back and hip," Drury told Trot Insider this morning. "I'll be fine, I'm just gonna take it easy."

Drury continued to say that while he's unsure about returning to the bike for his scheduled races tomorrow night at Woodbine, his plans are to return on Friday night unless his condition get worse.

Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing Drury a speedy recovery.
