Legislation approved last week in Michigan's state house is a step in the right direction for 'historical racing' or 'instant racing' to become reality at state racetracks, but according to a report, the movement still has an uphill battle to fight.
An article by mlive.com explains that the bill was passed by a vote of 91-16 last week. Even though the bill will have to fight for its survival in the Legislature, it could then have to be passed by both state and local voters due to a 2004 constitutional amendment.
“The race-horse industry has been kind of basically thrown under the bus since the casinos have come into our state. They’ve been unable to go into the modern era of doing some of the modern things to bring more people into their businesses,” the article quoted Republican Rep. Kevin Daley as saying.
The report also states that opposition to the move could also come from at least one Indian Tribe that currently operates a casino.
