Blu Meadow Willie won the featured $2,000 Remembrance Day Pace during the final card of the 2013 season at Red Shores’ Summerside Raceway on Sunday afternoon.
Driven by Brodie MacPhee, Blu Meadow Willie followed the cover of favourite Leading Camdidate and Jason Hughes after getting away near the back of the seven-horse field and then sprinted home to notch his third straight win in 1:58.4. Scootin For Joy and Mike Stevenson finished three-quarters of a length behind in second while Doll R General and Mark McKinnon came in third.
Blu Meadow Willie paid $16.60 to win as the 7-1 fourth choice.
The nine-year-old Drop Off gelding is owned by local trainer Robert and Brenda MacInnis. He has earned eight of his 45 career wins this year.
Trainer Donald Sweet and partner Orville Willis' Zip The Lip ($4.60) won the $1,400 Open Trot in front-striding fashion, stopping the clock in 2:00.1 with Brian MacPhee in the sulky. The favourite was followed by the Ronnie Gass-driven Caliban Hanover and Abundaspin with Harold Shepherd aboard. The win was the five-year-old Ken Warkentin gelding's sixth this year and 20th lifetime.
Buck Barker's first win of his 12-year-old campaign marked a special career milestone. The 2:01.1 effort in the fourth race was his 50th career victory. Brodie MacPhee drove the Keystone Raider gelding to the eight-length win for Charlottetown trainer Brent Campbell and co-owner Richard Campbell.
Summerside's meet leading driver Marc Campbell picked up a victory aboard Phil Desroches trainee Ramadawn ($13.10) in the second race and then later teamed up with the season's top trainer, Darren Trainor, in the ninth race with Le Fugueur ($6.20) to add one more to their leading win totals. Campbell ended the meet with 42 driving wins while Trainor sent out 15 winners in total.
