The 2012 meet at West Meadows Raceway concluded on Sunday afternoon with pacers Kalahari Cajun and Red Star Egyptian taking the spotlight after winning the co-featured Open events.
Kalahari Cajun wore down Flawless Art and driver Don Howlett to prevail in the $2,000 SSBOA Two & Three-Year-Old Open Pace by half a length in 2:08.3 for Swift Current, Sask. horseman Kevin Siever. The winning time established a new track record for three-year-old pacing colts. Favourite Im A Wildcat and Robert Baxter finished third.
The son of Island Fantasy, who is four-for-14 this year, paid $4.10 to win as the slight second choice.
Red Star Egyptian improved upon a pair of runner-up efforts in the previous weeks in the top pacing class with a 2:03.2 winning performance in the $1,500 Open Handicap Pace. Driven by Robert Baxter for the first time, the five-year-old Storm Compensation gelding defeated former Open winners Oblivious Boy, driven by Richard Remillard, and Outlaw Spider, with Dallas McGee in the bike.
The 9-2 fourth choice paid $11.30 for the mild upset and notched his sixth win in 25 seasonal starts.
Red Star Egyptian is trained by Tyler Redwood for owners Perry Trost and Bernard Surkan of Yorkton, Sask.

I loved watching Kalhari
I loved watching Kalhari Cajun win today's stake race! Kevin must be proud as he did not only drive the colt, but is also the owner, trainer and breeder of him. It is nice to see young talent succeed in the race industry!
