Insofar as the Friday night daily double at The Isle Pompano Park was concerned, all you needed to know was which horses were sent out by the Kim and Jay Sears Stable to come up a winner
.
Their big night began in the opening race, the $13,000 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace. Lucy Lucy was teamed by 21-year-old Matt Kakaley on this occasion and in the opening stages he took the 2-5 favourite to the back of the field of six starters.
A few steps before the :57.1 half, the five-year-old daughter of Tough Sir-Small Change was on the move and at the 1:25.1 three-quarter pole she was onto even terms with the pacemaker Shytown Lightning with Andy Santeramo in tow. In the stretch, Lucy Lucy was edging away unurged to score in 1:53.2 for her 11th win in 24 trips in 2009. Nillabomb was closing hard for Walt Ross, Jr. to take the place position and Chapsboots N Spurs with Wally Hennessey bolted out wide late to finish third.
Completing the daily double was the $18,300 final of the Orange Blossom Series for Florida-bred two-year-old pacing fillies. The Sears outfit sent out a three horse entry, and when Wally Hennessey moved Black Diamond Girl to the front after the :29.1 first quarter the outcome was never in serious doubt. The daughter of Six Of Diamonds-Money For Munchkin had a :28.2 closer in reserve to score easily in 1:56.4 for her fifth win in eight starts this year. Stablemate Diamond Chip with Jay Sears piloting closed next best for the runner-up spot, and Isle Of View Too recovered from an early miscue for Matt Kakaley to finish third. Ownership of Black Diamond Girl is shared by Jay Sears with Penny and Bill Kelley of Fellsmere, Florida. Kim Sears trains both Lucy Lucy and Black Diamond Girl.
Pompano's top weekly trot also went to the gate on Friday night for a $13,000 purse. Battleshoe Victor and Bruce Ranger were sent off as the 2-5 choice and they were pushed three-wide for most of the first quarter as Andy Santeramo parked all comers with Diva Diva in the early stages. Heading into the final turn, Battleshoe Victor was on the move again and clearly the best as he scored in 1:55. The seven-year-old Valley Victor-B Crysta gelding notched his eighth win in eighteen starts this year for owner Michael Polansky and trainer Tom Harmer. Terminator Hall was given a ground saving steer by Tom Sells and closed well for send with Colies and Wally Hennessey rounding out the ticket.
