Entries Barred After Awards Brawl

It has been reported that a handful of Standardbred horsemen are not allowed to enter their horses to race after arrests were made and charges were filed because of a brawl that took place at an annual industry awards dinner.

An article by The Mercury states that the annual Tasmanian harness awards took place this past weekend Down Under and the event was marred by a brawl which saw five men arrested and charged.

The report does not cite the names of the individuals in question, but it does state that charges range from disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and behaving in a violent manner.

The article goes on to explain that in light of the incident, stewards with the Office of Racing Integrity have refused to accept entries from any individuals that were associated with the incident until the situation has been analyzed. Additionally, horses that were in to go on Sunday’s card of racing at Mowbray were scratched because of the brouhaha.

The report has quoted Tony Murray, the head of racing integrity, as saying that one of the stewards’ powers is to “ban horses from racing if they see fit” and that “every case is judged on its merit, every case is different, so I don’t think a precedent will be set from this inquiry. It’s up to the stewards to decide what actions can be taken.”
