In the first race at Flamboro Downs on Saturday night (Oct. 1), trainer Malik Smith visited the winner's circle for the first time.
Sending Heartbeatnsizzle to the track in a $4,600 conditioned claiming pace, Smith broke a 20-race, eight-month drought to collect his first win as a trainer. The six-year-old Riverboat King mare ripped off cover to land an upset as the second-longest shot on the board and return $40.90 to win. The time of the mile was 1:58.4.
Malik Smith made his first start as a trainer on Feb. 10, 2022 when Flashcallthejudges hit the track and finished fifth in a non-winners of one event. When that horse was privately sold in late April, Smith acquired Heartbeatnsizzle, who has been his only starter since May. To date, Smith has earned $7,008 in purses with one second-place and two third-place finishes on his resume.
