Take On Da Boys went from the outhouse to the penthouse in Saturday’s $53,600 Alberta Marquis for three-year-old fillies at Century Downs for trainer/driver Rod Hennessy.
The daughter of JK Royal Flush-Doctor Ruth got away eighth from her outside starting spot, and she remained in that position through the opening half. My Camalina was the leader in the early going, and she was on the hook for fractions of :27.4 and :57.1. Blue Star Texas came first-over in the third quarter, and she gained a short lead while racing on the outside as the field passed the three-quarter pole in 1:26.1. Take On Da Boys worked her way into the flow at that point and was up to fourth on the outside heading into the final quarter of the rich contest.
Hennessy called on his filly to dig in late, and that’s exactly what she did. As a result, she fired home in :29.4 en route to prevailing by a neck in 1:57 over Cam Finish. Blue Star Texas held on to finish third.
Alberta partners Lorne Duffield of Edmonton and Diane Harries of Falun share ownership on the filly, who was sent off at odds of 15-1. After going winless in nine starts as a freshman, Take On Da Boys has responded with a 7-for-22 record this year. Her latest triumph pushed her lifetime earnings over $100,000.
Earlier on the card, Sing Like An Angel was a front-stepping winner in the $12,500 Fillies & Mares Open for trainer/driver Travis Cullen.
The five-year-old daughter of Bettors Delight-Place At The Table carved out splits of :27.1, :57 and 1:25.1 before using a :29.3 kicker to seal the deal. She won by 3-1/4 lengths over Rummys Command in 1:54.4. Third prize went to Gottaluckydeal.
Sent off as the 1-9 favourite, Sing Like An Angel won for the partnership of Keith and Margaret Hannah, Jodie Cullen and Travis Cullen. She now boasts a 14-6-1 record from 22 starts this season in addition to a career bankroll that stands at $190,114.
