A pair of $14,000 Preferred events highlighted the Sunday evening program at Rideau Carleton Raceway, with weekly bragging rights being earned by Hesgotlegs and
Montreal Phil in their respective tilts.
Hesgotlegs used his off-the-pace skills to earn a 1:57.3 triumph in the Preferred Trot. Stephane Gendron mapped out the winning trip for the five-year-old son of Feel Like A Winner, who got up to win by three-quarters of a length over Silverado Dream. Finnegan rounded out the top three finishers.
Sent off as the 6-5 favourite in the seven-horse affair, the gelding won for the eighth time this season and for the 16th time in his career. Trainer Gary MacDonald shares ownership on the career winner of $111,138 with Gordon McDonald and Christopher Boland of Ottawa, ON.
Montreal Phil pulled off an 11-1 upset in the Preferred Pace thanks in large part to a sweet trip mapped out by driver Stephane Brosseau. The Guy Corbeil pupil benefitted from a second over trip en route to prevailing by half of a length over race favourite Peenie in 1:53.2. Armadilo grabbed the show dough.
The six-year-old son of Blissfull Hall, who is owned by Hudson Standrdbrd Stb Inc of Hudson, QC, now owns a 5-2-5 record from his 21 trips postward this season. The 19-time winner upped his lifetime earnings to $159,449 with the win.
