According to a report, three bidders are in the running to become the service provider to operate specific areas of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.’s lucrative lottery business.

The OLG announced in September that it was seeking service providers to run aspects of its lottery business. At the time, the Toronto Star reported that the OLG was not looking to privatize, and that the Ontario government would still retain ownership and would continue to oversee the operations.

The Toronto Star recently ran a follow-up story to the situation in which it cited ‘sources’ as saying that the three qualified companies that submitted bids were Rogers Communications, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, and GTECH-Scientific Games.

In its RFP, the OLG announced that the names of pre-qualified proponents would not be released while the process is ongoing. The OLG stated that it expects to announce the successful service provider in fall 2015 (The Star report states that the successful provider will be announced in November of 2015).

When asked about the qualified bidders, Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa respected the RFP process and did not divulge any specifics.

“I’m not going to comment on any of them,” The Star has quoted Souza as saying. “The proponents are out there doing their work. They have a year. We’ll make a decision in the fall of 2015 — they’re working closely with the OLG.”

The report also contains some comments from officials with the three companies, none of which wished to engage the topic.
