Lickcreek Jazzy survived a challenging trip on Sunday and was rewarded with the lion’s share of the $12,500 purse in this week’s edition of the Fillies & Mares Open
at Fraser Downs.
The seven-year-old daughter of Hi Ho Silverheels, who was sent off at odds of 4-1 in the six-mare affair, dug in to win by three-quarters of a length after doing the first-over work for trainer/driver Ed Hensley.
Jans Rich Girl sped the field to the quarter pole in :29.1 before taking a backseat to Rossridge Fortune, who was one half of a heavily-favoured entry sent out by trainer Keith Clark. Rossridge Fortune supplied middle splits of :59.4 and 1:28.3 over a tiring oval listed as “slow”, and she did so while feeling steady pressure from Lickcreek Jazzy.
Rossridge Fortune was still a length better than Lickcreek Jazzy at the head of the lane, but Lickcreek Jazzy’s :29.3 closing panel was enough to haul down Rossridge Fortune in the closing strides en route to the 1:58.2 score. Rossridge Fortune held on for the runner-up award while Judges Acenthehole was third.
Hensley shares ownership on the productive performer with the J J J Stables of Aldergrove, BC. Lickcreek Jazzy, who went 8-for-28 last year while banking $106,660, won for the 24th time in her career. The lion’s share of the purse pushed her overall cash stash over $300,000.
