In the Fillies and Mares Preferred Handicap Pace on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Century Mile, Stash The Cookies went to the gate from the outside post in the field of five going for $12,500, took back early as the trailer and sprinted home to nose out the win for her first of the new year.
Dave Kelly took the John Chappell student to post in the fifth race feature as the favourite from post five. As the wings drew away, Stash The Cookies eased back into fifth, 6-1/2 lengths off the leading Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey) at the quarter in :27.3. The field continued single file through the :55.3 half. Stash The Cookies was the first to pull a line and she buzzed up into second from the outside at the three-quarters in 1:25.2. Outlaw Sharktastic dug in going through the final turn and down the stretch, and the pair of mares duelled to the wire. Down to the photo finish, Stash The Cookies came out on top by a nose in the 1:54.1 mile. Goodbye Ceia Later (Phil Giesbrecht) completed the triactor.
Stash The Cookies (Sunfire Blue Chip-Saucy B) is a nine-year-old mare owned by Derek Gilbert of Brandon, Man. She earned her 42nd career victory from 118 starts, moving her lifetime sum to $417,859. Coming off an 11-for-17 campaign in 2024, she paid $3.30 to win as the bettors' choice.
