After dominating the Alberta standings in 2014, 22-year-old horseman Travis Cullen has remained hot through January, concluding the first month of the year with a training triple at Northlands Park on Saturday.
Cullen earned his first victory of the day in the fourth race with Book My Flite ($4), now a back-to-back winner, and later won the seventh race with Little Native Girl ($3.60) in her provincial debut. Cullen's stable picked up another win in the 10th race finale with his father Ron driving Gottaluckydeal ($10.90).
Cullen currently tops the Edmonton racetrack's 2015 standings with horses he trains having won 17 races in January -- nine more than runner-up Gerry Hudon, who picked up a victory on Saturday with Cabo Real ($33.30) and 23-year-old driver Nathan Sobey posting an impressive 1:55.1 mile on the -15 degree afternoon.
Cullen's weekend began with a sweep of the first two races on Friday night at Northlands Park, and he had the top two finishers in the second race Mares Open.
Last year, Canada's inaugural Future Star Award winner had a career year with his trainees winning 174 races and $715,751 in purses.
Saturday's card marked the end of Northlands' 2014/2015 harness racing meet. Harness racing in Alberta will resume after a short break on March 28 at the all new Century Downs racing facility near Calgary. Horse racing returns to Northlands Park when the 77-day thoroughbred meet kicks off on Friday, May 1 with a 6:30 p.m. post time.
