Stormaway went a long first-over journey on Monday afternoon at Western Fair Raceway to prevail in the $18,400 Preferred Pace for trainer/driver Dan Megens.
Starting with Post 6, Megens landed the six-year-old Northern Luck stud into fourth, as Shadywood Baron (Alfie Carroll) fired to the front in :28.1. Stormaway moved to the outside on the way to the half and challenged the leader past markers of :58.1 and 1:27.
Gaining a half-length lead over Shadywood Baron turning for home, Stormaway finally disposed of that rival and held off a charging XLB Patrick (Mike Langdon) by three quarters of a length in 1:56. Grand Bend Turbo (Mike Sumner) rounded out the top three.
Megens also owns Stormaway with partners Janice Van Nest and Peter Caetano. The former OSS Superstar and Spring Pacing Championship winner has 17 lifetime wins and a bankroll of $411,971.
Suited posted an 11-1 shocker in the $18,400 Preferred Trot for driver Steve Davis. The five-year-old Sierra Kosmos stud went down the road through splits of :28.2, :59.3 and 1:29.1 before tripping the teletimer in a spirited 1:59.1.
Trottin Troy (Dave Wall) finished second after being sent off as the favourite, while Suzys Solitaire (Ross Battin) completed the top three.
Mike Keeling trains Suited for owners P C Wellwood Enterprises Inc. and E C S Racing LLC. It was the 8th lifetime win for the trotter, who now has earnings of $66,736.
Miss Angie pulled off a 19-1 pari-mutuel puzzler in the $15,200 Mares Preferred Pace. The six-year-old Fit For Life mare was following third-over from sixth in the back half, as Three Xs (Garrett Whelan) laid down panels of :28.3, :58.3 and 1:28.
With Albert Green at the controls, Miss Angie swept from sixth at the top of the lane and exploded to a two-length triumph in 1:59. Pride Of Dilinger (Mike Langdon) won the place photo over favourite Just Her Way (Bruce Richardson).
Katherine Cain owns and trains Miss Angie, who is two-for-two this season. Lifetime, the mare has 15 career victories and boasts a bankroll of $137,846.
Western Culture completed a front-end mission in the $12,800 Preferred-2 Pace. Brad Forward steered the five-year-old Western Hanover gelding and they cut fractions of :27.4, :57.1 and 1:25.4 en route to a two and a quarter-length score in 1:57.
Cuban Seelster (Doug McNair) finished second and Always Ready (Mike Sumner) was third.
