The fog continued to hover over Fraser Downs’ 5/8 mile oval on Saturday afternoon, but that did not faze the four-year-old Penny Bath Memorial elimination winners, Nazko Jade and Caru Hanover

.

Nazko Jade and Darren Howald took the first $9,375 elim after converting from a perfect pocket trip for the mild 5-1 upset in 2:01.2. Red Star Diamond (Brent Beelby) recovered from an early miscue to finish second and favourite Well Matched (Bill Davis) finished third while pacesetter Sylvias Jewel (Rick White) faded to fourth.

Unraced at two, the As Promised miss scored her third win in seven lifetime starts bringing her earnings to nearly $15,000 for trainer and co-owner Helmut Ratz and partner Ronald Maichin of Richmond, B.C.

In the second elimination, Caru Hanover delivered on her parimutual promise with Brent Beelby in tow. The daughter of Artsplace, who has earned over $13,000 for owner Robert Murphy of Surrey, B.C., used a front-end trip to take her third consecutive win and a new mark of 1:58.

Silkys Got Promise (Darren Howald) and Lets Went Robbie (Scott McKnight) finished second and third.

In other action, Warrawee Iceman pulled off a nice victory in the $17,000 Open Pace sending Howald back to the winner’s circle.

The five-year-old Camluck gelding sat fourth for most of the mile as Round Table Review (Scott Knight) led the way. Warrawee Iceman made his move at the three-quarters mark and battled with the pacesetter down the lane. The bay kept on trucking and was able to get up for the 7-1 upset in 1:55.1 by a nose. Born Again Dragon (Gord Abbott) rounded out the top three.

Warrawee Iceman’s 11th win pushed his earnings to over $120,000 for trainer Raymond Gemmill. He is owned by the Western Pacific Stable and Ian Moyes of Surrey and Steve Shand of Port Coquitlam, B.C.
