It was announced this past fall that a rare filly in the Maritimes was in need of a name, and Trot Insider has been informed that, after a ‘name the foal’ contest was conducted, the young pacer now has a new handle.
In October of 2018, the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry Association had announced that ‘Cheering for Charity’ was conducting a name the foal contest for Barona Lilac’s filly. The filly had been born on April 18, 2018 and was from the first and only crop by Steelhead Hanover.
The late Steelhead Hanover, who was a popular young first-year stallion at the time, was euthanized at the Atlantic Veterinary College on May 4, 2017 following emergency treatment. Steelhead Hanover, a multiple stakes-winning son of Bettors Delight, had won 24 lifetime races and banked more than $577,000 in purses. He was a half-brother to Sprig Hanover, the dam of 2016 two-year-old world champion Downbytheseaside.

The NSHRIA had hoped that it would receive some great name suggestions through the contest, as well as provide another opportunity to give back to some great organizations in the Colchester County.
As part of the contest, he individual that ultimately submitted the chosen name would be able to chose which charity (Big Brothers Big Sisters, SOS Dragon Boat Team, Truro Boys and Girls Club, Bible Hill Fire Brigade, or the Truro Rotary Club) would receive a share in the filly at no cost.
Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry Association Executive Director Robyn Crowe has informed Trot Insider of the winning submission.
“The registered name is Steelthethunder and was submitted by Diane Mantel of Truro, Nova Scotia,” Crowe explained.
“Diane chose the SOS Dragon Boat Team as the charity of her choice to win the percentage of the filly,” said Crowe, who stated that the NSHRIA was thrilled to receive 612 submissions from all over North America.
