Trainer Ben Wallace added some depth to Monday’s $13,200 Preferred at The Raceway at the Western Fair District when he dropped Clic K into the entry box last week, and not even a first-over journey could keep the photogenic gelding out of the winner’s circle.
With Jason Brewer at the lines, Clic K got away third from his second-tier post position, and the two of them watched Wild Dragon blast to the lead from the pole position starting spot. Wild Dragon zipped by the quarter pole in :27.1 before feeling heavy duty pressure from Clic K on the way to the mid-way point. A nose separated those two at the half in :57.2, but Clic K got the upper hand in the backstretch.
The five-year-old son of Shanghai Phil-Eclatante took over command while racing parked past the third marker in 1:25.3, and he used a :30-second final frame to stave off race favourite Royal Outlook by three-quarters of a length in 1:55.3 - the program’s quickest mile.
It was the first win of the season in two tries for the 22-time winner, who assembled an ultra-impressive record of 13-4-6 from his 31 trips to various tracks last season. Owned by Holland Racing Stable of Aurora and Brad Grant of Milton, ON, Clic K has now banked more than $258,000 to date.
