One of the top pacing mares in North America has been classified as a genetic male according to the United States Trotting Association after recent testing

performed stateside.

The USTA has ruled that Martha Maxine, trained and co-owned by Erv Miller, will now be programmed as a horse. She He qualified yesterday at Gaitway Farms as a horse, and in the future can only race against open company or horses and geldings.

According to a report from the New Bolton Center School of Veterinary Medicine, Martha Maxine is a male pseudohermaphrodite with 64 intact chromosomes and carries the sex chromosomes X and Y, like a male.

Earlier this year, Arizona Helen was tested after racing with ambiguous sexuality. After subsequent testing, that horse was also found to have an intersex condition. To make this even more interesting, Arizona Helen is a brother to the dam of Martha Maxine.

Does this mean that the male pseudohermaphrodite condition is hereditary? While it's clearly a genetic defect, there are instances in humans where intersex conditions like this are passed solely from the maternal side to male descendants. In these cases, the daughters in the line can be carriers but do not actually have the condition.

Robert: The horse has female parts on the outside and male on the inside...I don't think that breeding is in the cards for Martha Maxine.

What exactly are they going to do when the owners breed this horse?? I assume breeding is in the future. I'm thinking that maybe a little too much digging is going on here. Either this animal has male parts, or female parts. Not really good exposure for our struggling industry.

Rob these animals are sterile, there is not a uterus or functioning testicles, and cannot be bred. There have also been several XY women to compete in the Olympics and some of their world records are being erased. They are males in every facet except their sex organs didn't develop.

Is he still a winner of a leg of The Classic Distaff? What about the other mares stakes race he won in the past couple years? What about the mare stakes he is paid into--the Roses are Red, the Milton--are those payments refunded?
