In an era where horses are shipped all across North America, if not the world, to compete, and when their drivers fly in private jets to make it from one stakes-laden card to another on the same day, it’s nice to hear the story of Mary MacQuarrie. Mary, an 85-year-old trainer from Inverness, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia lives about half-a-mile from Inverness Raceway, and every morning, rain or shine, after they’ve both had their breakfast, she harnesses her 12-year-old gelding, Dashpedia, hooks him into the jogger, and takes him through town to the track. The routine keeps them both feeling young, and their on-track results prove it. By Melissa Keith.
