The Garth Schurman Memorial Pace headlines Tuesday’s 12-dash card of harness racing at Red Shores’ Summerside Raceway. The card was cancelled on Sunday but moved to Tuesday night.
First-race post time is 6:30 p.m. and the Schurman Memorial has been carded as Race 10. McMaverick has been named the morning line favourite in the $1,600 class for trainer-driver-owner Keith Campbell of Tyne Valley. The nine-year-old son of Western Maverick was a 1:57.3 winner last month at the Prince County Oval but will have some stiff competition with veteran pacers Bowyer Hanover (to be driven by Gary Chappell) and Painted Desert (Jason Hughes).
Born in 1949, Garth Schurman was a longtime participant in western P.E.I. racing with top pacers like Meg and Ten Spot, as well as top class trot mare Bus Stop, who he won 10 races with in 1971. Schurman passed away in 2013, but leaves son Rocky Schurman who is an active trainer and driver.
The Tuesday night top class will line up for Race 11. Doing Some Damage has been favoured from the rail in the $2,100 event. Brian MacPhee is scheduled to be in the bike for trainer Trevor Hicken and owner Kent Livingston of Cornwall. The seven-year-old son of Cole Muffler is consistently pacing in 1:55-1:56 on Island tracks and will face off against a field of five rivals in this week’s contest. Jeb has Post 3 with Hughes in the bike for owners Robi Hughes and Eric and Blair MacLauchlan, all of Stratford, while Motorino has Post 5 for trainer-driver Terry Gallant fresh off a 1:57.1 victory in Summerside. Other entries include Rash B Havior (Marc Campbell), DBs Rosco (Kenny Arsenault) and Machinthesand (Norris Rogers).
