Super Classic, a Hambletonian hopeful in August, makes his next start in the $38,500 Charles I. Smith Final on Friday, September 20, 2013 at Freehold Raceway.
The non-wagering event for New Jersey-sired three-year-old trotters drew three entrants.
"This colt was in against [eventual winner] Royalty For Life on August 3 at the Meadowlands, clearly the toughest of the three Hambletonian divisions,” said owner William J. Augustine of Hammonton, NJ. “I think he raced well that day, considering the fierce competition. He has been freshened up and showed that he can handle Freehold's half-mile track by winning his last start pretty handily.”
Augustine, owner of Winners Circle Blueberries and an accomplished amateur driver, made a barn change after the Hambletonian, turning the gelded son of Muscles Yankee over to Hall of Famer Jim Doherty. Freehold’s leading driver, Eric Abbatiello, will be in the sulky and leave from the rail position.
Super Classic has two wins, one second and four thirds from 21 career starts and earnings of $54,703.
The competition includes Bouncer, a son of Muscles Yankee driven by Tom Jackson and trained by James Petruccelli, and Dagget, a Chocolatier gelding from the barn of John Butenschoen and driven by Tyler Butenschoen.
The Charles Smith is sponsored by the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey.
The Charles Smith Final has a post time of 12:20 p.m. and follows a $7,000 second leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes – Green Acres for two-year-old trotting fillies at 12:15 p.m.
Three are entered in the filly trot: Worldrecordsweeper by Muscles Yankee, Ill Bring Dessert by Chocolatier and Muscle Pump Queen by Muscles Yankee.
The feature on the betting card is the $25,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes – Green Acres Final for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings, the seventh race.
