Northfield To Host Sires Stakes Monday

Nine $40,000 divisions of Ohio Sires Stakes for two-year-old pacing and trotting fillies are set to be contested on Monday night (August 15) at Northfield Park.

Seventy-six freshman distaffs passed the entry box at the Cleveland twice-arounder, with 43 pacers vying in five divisions and 33 trotters battling in four OSS tests in Leg 3 of this series.

Ohio stallions represented with progeny include Art Official (8); McArdle (6); Big Bad John (6); Charley Barley (6); Manhardt (3); The Panderosa (3); and Woodstock (2). Stallions with one foal each are Arts Chip, Foreclosure N, No Pan Intended, Oaks Enforcer, Santana Blue Chip, Trick Man and World Of Rocknroll.

Lisa Ezzo of Delaware, Ohio has bred two of the filly pacers, including Barleys Angel and Berazzled, and three in partnership with Marion Beachy of Sugarcreek, Ohio: Barley Nation, Bourbon And Barley and Mrs Charlesparkley. Beachy is also the breeder of Banger L.

Billy Walters and Joe McLead of Delaware, Ohio-based Sugar Valley Farm are the breeders of Zoe Ellasen and By Bye Felicia; while Senena Esty’s Spring Haven Farm is represented by Official Kisser and Da Vinci Artist (in partnership with Doug Millard Holdings). Touch Of Trick and Rosa’s Touch were both bred by Knox Services.

The freshman filly pacing divisions could be renamed the ‘Brian Brown Club,’ as the Ohio-based conditioner has one contestant in each OHSS event. Brown will harness Bye Bye Felicia (Race 1), Bellasbrowneyegirl (Race 4), Strike A Chord (Race 6), Type A Grey (Race 9) and Glorious Intent (Race 12). Trainers Ron Burke, Bill Dailey, Herb LeVan, Joe Seekman and Ron Potter all have two laterally-gaited fillies going postward Monday evening.

Ohio-bred pacing fillies looking to pick up their third consecutive win in this series after having captured the first two legs include Bye Bye Felicia and Type A Grey.

Bye Bye Felicia (Race 1, PP5) is a daughter of Woodstock who won her first OHSS test on July 3 at Northfield in 1:56.1 and the second leg on July 19 at Scioto Downs in 1:54.2. Type A Grey, an Art Official lass, will start from Post 4 (Race 9) after having won Leg 1 at Northfield in 1:57.2 and Leg 2 at Scioto in 1:54.3.

Seven fillies will be trying to pick up a victory after having won one leg of the series. Nikki Bella (Race 1, PP4) won Leg 2 at Scioto on July 19 in 1:55.1, while Loreenas Ruffian (Race 4, PP4) won Leg 1 at Northfield on July 3 in 1:56.2. Strike A Chord (Race 6, PP7) also won Leg 1 on July 3 at Northfield, clocked in 1:56.3. Da Vinci Artist (Race 9, PP6) won Leg 2 at Scioto in 1:56.1, while Big Bad Baby (Race 9, PP5) won Leg 1 at Northfield in 1:58.4. Classy But Sassy (Race 12, #3) won Leg 2 at Scioto in 1:55 and rival Zoe Ellasen (Race 12, #5) won Leg 1 at Northfield in 1:55.2.

In the four trotting divisions, the Ohio stallion Dejarmbro has 14 fillies represented, while Triumphant Caviar has six and Break The Bank K has three. Chip Chip Hooray, And Away We Go and Neely Dunn each have two daughters in these OHSS ranks, while Amigo Hall, Full Count, His Highness and Iron Duke all have one contestant each.

The Double Spring Farm of Dundee, Ohio is the breeder of the fillies I Like Purple, Lady In Purple and Purple Sona. Homesville, Ohio’s Andy Burkholder bred Renne Lu and Erikas Luann, while Richard and Joyce McClelland of Zanesville, Ohio are the breeders of Lets Get Started and Henpecked. Pennys And Dines and Amuses were both bred by Robert Key of Leechburg, PA.

In the trotting ranks, trainer Chris Beaver has a filly in every OHSS Leg 3 division. Beaver will send out Mov Adalyn (Race 2, PP8), Chim Swift (Race 3, PP4), Bamaslastchance (Race 5, PP3) and Mybigbrowneyedgirl (Race 7, PP1). Trainers Bobby Brower, Jim Arledge Jr., Miles Wollam, Scott Mogan and Steve Carter all have two fillies each scattered throughout these events.

Three trotting lasses will vie for their third OHSS victory in Leg 3, including Amuses (Race 3, PP6), trained by Rich Gillock for Bob Key of Leechburg, PA. The royally-bred daughter of Break The Bank K-Sweet Mademoiselle-Varenne won Leg 1 on July 3 at Northfield in 2:00 and Leg 2 on July 19 at Scioto in 1:58.2.

Madeira As (Race 3, #8), the richest filly in the four trotting divisions with $60,650 in her coffers, won Leg 1 in 1:59 and Leg 2 in 1:58.2 for trainer Anette Lorentzon. Likewise, the Miles Wollam-trained Purple Sona (Race 7, PP8) won Leg 1 at Northfield on July 3 in 2:00.4 and Leg 2 at Scioto on July 19 in 1:58.2.

Winners of one OHSS leg in this series include Lets Get Started (Race 3, PP3), a Bobby Brower trainee who won Leg 2 at Scioto on July 19 in 1:56.3. Chim Swift (Race 3, PP4) won Leg 1 at Northfield on July 3 in 1:57.4 for trainer Chris Beaver, while Bamaslastchance (Race 5, PP3) and Emerald City Of Oz (Race 5, PP8) both won their respective Leg 1 contests at Northfield on July 3 in 2:01.2.

Ohio Sires Stakes continue Tuesday, August 16 with nine divisions of two-year-old trotting and pacing colts and geldings battling in Leg 3 competitions.
