Two-Year-Olds Aplenty At Summerside

The spotlight will be on the future stars of the Maritimes racing scene when the two-year-old fillies and colts strut their stuff Wednesday at Red Shores’ Summerside Raceway.

A special first-race post time of 6 p.m. is slated for the card, as horses and drivers will compete in the Callbeck Stakes at the historic Prince County Oval.

The trotters will hit the stage first, with Howmac Gypsy (to be driven by Jack Panting) being listed as the 5-2 early choice from Post 2 on the evening’s opening race. Panting’s grandfather, Ralph Annear, a legendary stakes performer over the years, is co-owner of the filly with Steven Sorrie of Montague, PE.

There are several highlights on the card. Up And Gone, a two-year-old colt by Driven To Win, will make his fourth career start. He already has a win and two thirds on his resume. Mike Stevenson will be in the race bike. Weddingbell Ridge (Clare MacDonald) and K D Overdrive, out of the powerful Downey stables, will lead the charge in their respective stakes assignments.

The Downey stables have enjoyed a storied career in stakes action and they have the opportunity to collect even more trophies when Jackson K Down starts from Post 2 in Race 10 for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Steve Mason. Barrieau has been red hot after capturing the Basil Whelan top driver trophy during Governor’s Plate week. The NB pilot has teamed up with MacQuarrie’s Meats in the ‘Drive for Charity’ promotion at Red Shores raising money for the Upper Room Food Bank.

Owner Gordon MacLean of Winsloe, PE is enjoying stakes success with Scarlet Safari, a two-year-old daughter of Articulator driven by Barrieau and trained by son Darryl. Known for their trotting stars, the MacLeans will send out the pacer that will be looking for her third win in a row. Darryl’s son-in-law, Marc Campbell, will handle the other MacLean entry, Scarlet Saphire, in Race 6. Darryl’s brother, Scott, is the groom of the Chasin Racin filly.

The 14-dash program of racing will get underway at 6 p.m.
