Mike MacLellan Passes

Trot Insider has learned that longtime horseman Mike MacLellan passed away on Wednesday, July 21 after suffering a heart attack. The resident of Sarnia, Ont. was 49

years old.

MacLellan began his career in the horseracing business in the Maritimes at age 15 when he got a job for Callie Rankin. He would later work for Duncan MacDonald prior to his move east.

He arrived in Ontario in the mid-1980s and worked for Peter Swift and Paul Larrabee.

MacLellan was a regular at the Hiawatha Horse Park, as he raced there from the day it opened until as recently as two weeks ago.

The most notable horse in which MacLellan developed was Corky Baran p,1:49.3 ($394,951)

Mike is the son of Donald and Sadie MacLellan, and is the brother of Edward (Linda) MacLellan, Dawn Marie MacLellan, Paula (Andrew) Grieve, Susan (Mike) Cappadocia, Cathy MacLellan (Tim) and John (GiGi) MacLellan.

A memorial service took place this past weekend.
