The connections of a total of 20 colts and geldings have entered their charges to contest the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes, which will be raced in a pair of $78,767 divisions this Saturday (June 6) at Mohawk Racetrack.
The divisions, for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings, have been carded as Race 5 (approximate post time 8:45 p.m.) and Race 9 (10:05 p.m.) on the 12-dash program, which carries a first-race post time of 7:25 p.m.
The Somebeachsomewhere, formerly known as the Burlington Stakes, annually serves as the Woodbine Entertainment Group’s stakes lead-in to the Pepsi North America Cup eliminations. The ‘Cup’ eliminations will be raced on Saturday, June 13, while the $1 million Pepsi North America Cup final will take place on Saturday, June 20 at the Campbellville, Ont. oval.
The first division is highlighted by Western Ideal colt Traceur Hanover, who has drawn Post 1 for driver Randy Waples and trainer Normand Bardier Jr. The bay is heading into the Somebeachsomewhere off just a single qualifying effort this season. That mile – a open-length victory in 1:52.4 – came last week at Mohawk with Waples in the sulky. Traceur Hanover is coming into the Somebeachsomewhere after a successful freshman campaign in which he won five of his 14 starts, including the Breeders Crown Two-Year-Old Colt Pace at the Meadowlands Racetrack.
The opening split will also feature the Ken Sucee-trained and Jody Jamieson-driven Pierce Hanover, who has drawn Post 9. The Cams Card Shark colt is heading into the Somebeachsomewhere after having tallied a pair of victories in conditioned races over Mohawk in recent weeks. The bay stashed away a total of $123,000 in purse earnings during his 11-race freshman campaign, much of which came from his four victories. He has now won six of his 13 career races and has more than $143,000 in overall earnings.
The second division of the Somebeachsomewhere will see the Bob McIntosh-trained and John Campbell-driven Go Daddy Go start from the outside Post 10. The chestnut Ponder colt will head into Saturday’s contest off of his seven-length victory in last weekend’s Ontario Sires Stakes event at Western Fair. Last season’s Battle of Waterloo winner banked just under $400,000 in purses as a freshman, and he has won five of his 15 career races to this point.
The second division will feature other notable freshman along the starting gate, as Allbeff N Nobull (Post 2, Brett Miller), Rockin N Heaven (PP3, Trevor Henry) and The Wayfaring Man (PP7, Jack Moiseyev), among others, are scheduled to face off.
The four top-rated horses in Trot Magazine’s 2015 Pepsi North America Cup Spring Book were not entered to contest the Somebeachsomewhere. O’Brien Award winner Artspeak (3-1 Spring Book favourite), Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final winner Reverend Hanover (5-1 second choice), Art Rooney Pace winner In The Arsenal (6-1 third choice) and the undefeated Wiggle It Jiggleit (12-1) have all taken a pass on the Somebeachsomewhere.
George Teague, owner of the undefeated Wiggle It Jiggleit, told Trot Insider late Monday that his star Mr Wiggles gelding will not be contesting the Somebeachsomewhere, but will ship to Ontario to contest the ‘Cup’ eliminations.
