
The Woodstock Police Force in Woodstock, N.B. is currently investigating a tragic incident that resulted in a fatality at the Woodstock Raceway on June 14, 2025.
Reports indicate the incident occurred trackside with the starting gate and a spectator, and did not involve any on-track participants or horses.
"We are in the early stages of the investigation, but at this time, it appears to be a tragic accident," said Mark Bennett, Chief of the Woodstock Police Force in a statement issued on Saturday night. "In order to ensure a thorough investigation, the track will be closed until it is completed.
"Please bear with us, as we work through this difficult time. When more information becomes available, we will share what we can."
“The entire racing community is deeply saddened by the tragic events of June 14," said Dr. Mitchell Downey, President of Horse Racing New Brunswick in a statement to Trot Insider late Saturday. "On behalf of all our participants we wish to express our deepest sympathies. We also ask everyone to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time.”
In a press release issued on Sunday evening, the Atlantic Provinces Harness Racing Commission (APHRC) confirmed that a tragic accident occurred resulting in the death of a young child who was struck by the starting gate during live racing.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy that has deeply impacted the harness racing community,” said Kyle Burton, Director of Racing for the APHRC. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the child’s family, friends and all those affected by this devastating loss.”
The APHRC stated it is fully cooperating with law enforcement as they carry out their investigation into the incident. In parallel, the Commission has launched its own internal review to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident and to evaluate any additional safety measures that may be necessary to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.
The APHRC is also in close contact with Horse Racing New Brunswick and will continue to offer support and assistance as the investigation progresses.
Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and the privacy of those affected, the Commission will not be providing further comment at this time. Additional updates will be issued when appropriate.
