Trot Insider has learned that longtime owner Stephen Scarff of Halifax, N.S. has passed away in his 69th year

A native of London, Ont., Scarff first caught the harness racing bug at Western Fair Raceway before diving into horse ownership. Scarff and trainer Murray Brethour teamed up for numerous stakes winners and overnight competitors including Windsun Ben, Freckly Sara and Kindly Poet.

Most recently Scarff and Brethour campaigned 2010 Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final winner Mach Dreamer and Brodies Song. Scarff was also the owner of Drain Daddy, Mach Dreamer's North America Cup-eligible full brother who won in 1:52.1 last Thursday night at Woodbine Racetrack.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Stephen, Jr. (June); daughters, Kelly and Kathy (Todd); brothers, Richard and Christopher; sister, Nancy Franklin; and grandchildren, Amanda, Sara, Bryanna, Rebecca, Gillian and Rory.

Visitation will take place Thursday, May 19 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, NS.

A funeral service will take place Friday, May 20 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 5900 Inglis Street, Halifax, NS, B3H 1K8

Memorial donations are to be directed to the Salvation Army, Diabetes Association of Nova Scotia or any charity.
