The Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) today announced that, effective May 1, 2010, nonresidents will be required to apply for and obtain an ORC licence
in order to race in Ontario.
This move will treat non-residents in the same manner as Ontario residents who apply for and pay for a license to race in Ontario.
Previously, some non-resident licensees could apply for a no-cost ORC “reciprocal licence” if they held a valid license and were in good standing with the following jurisdictions: Québec, Saskatchewan and the Maritime Provinces. The ORC had been reviewing a number of issues surrounding licensing between the ORC and other jurisdictions, and determined there was limited reciprocal value to Ontario licensees.
Examples of current annual license fees are as follows:
Category Fee (Cdn $)
Owner - $100
Trainer - $100
Driver - $100
Groom - $20
Before May 1, 2010, any non-resident wishing to race in Ontario should contact the local ORC licensing office to apply for an ORC license. Applicants with a valid license and in good standing with the above-named jurisdictions will be required to pay the Ontario license fee but will not be charged the $20 new application fee.
