Don Huston Passes

Longtime harness racing industry participant Don Huston, 93, of Xenia, Ohio, passed away on April 27, 2018, at the Greenewood Manor in Xenia where he had resided the past several months.

He was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Xenia, the son of Ross H. and Mary (Gardner) Huston. He graduated from Xenia High School in 1942 where he was the drum major, sold cars at the Purdom Motor Sales in Xenia, but was famous for calling horse races for more than 50 years in both Ohio and Kentucky. His races always started with his "the gate swings into the stretch and heeerrre they come."

He was an avid golfer and card player and at one time was the sports director for radio station WBZI Xenia where he did Xenia games' live play-by-play.

He retired from the Greene County Auditor's office in 1983. He was a member of the Faith Community United Methodist Church.

Huston was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 73 years, Carol Ann (Kendig) Huston on April 5, 2018; brother Cecil (Irene); and an infant brother, Elbert. He is survived by sons, James W. (Ann) and John E.; grandchildren, Elizabeth "Beth", Bradley J. and Bryan T.; great- grandchildren, Maliah, Wyatt, Spencer and Nolan; daughter-in-law, Judy; niece, Joyce Sheridan; nephew, Roger; and other family members and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday (May 1) at 12:30 p.m. at the McColaugh Funeral Home, Inc., 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia, with Rev. Ron Swiger officiating. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Xenia. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
