Prince Edward Island horseman Robert Shepherd was involved in one of the sport's most horrific accidents at Woodbine Racetrack on March 2, 2009. Thankfully, the story has a happy ending, and not just for Shepherd
.
A trio of judges recently selected 'A day he would rather forget,' Holland College journalism student -- and Trot Magazine contributor -- Nicholas Oakes' account of Shepherd's career, crash and return to racing, as the top story among this year's graduating class.
“We thought the writer was the best storyteller. It was also well written and the grammar and spelling were virtually flawless,” said Journal Pioneer news editor Darlene Shea, one of this year's judges. “It was well researched, had a lot of different voices and a good use of quotes.”
Stories of the Holland College Journalism graduating class are published annually by the Journal Pioneer, judged, and a cash prize goes to the top entry.
