Longtime horseman William Edward 'Bill' Palmquist passed away quietly at his home in Welland, Ont., on Saturday, April 16 at the age of 82, surrounded by the love of his family.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Marie Mae for 58 wonderful years. Cherished dad to his only son William K. Adored brother to Greta (Gerry), Karl (Shirley) and Bob (2006). Caring uncle to Linda, Jeff and their families. His family in Chisasibi, Quebec. Cousin to George Lameboy, Pauline, Beth Sealhunter, Mary Chawanish, late Isabel and their families.

Bill was born in a Tee Pee to the late Jack John and Winnifred Palmquist in Fort George, Que. As a youngster, he was a survivor of the residential school system. As an adult, Bill was not able to secure employment due to his aboriginal status. So, as means of survival he joined the Canadian Army. He served as a peace keeper in Germany. He received a gold medal for being a sharp shooter in competition on the Bisley team. After returning to a civilian life, he met his wife Mae and wed in 1958. He worked at Port Weller Dry Docks as a top welder for 35 years. Upon retirement, he became very involved in harness racing for the last 40 years. One of Bill’s hobbies was golfing and he was pretty good at it, winning several trophies with the Dry Dock team. Bill was also an extremely talented artist, making diverse pieces of fine aboriginal art in many different forms, which were shown and sold at Pow Wow's. Honourable mention to Jackie and Dianne, who had Bill honoured at the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre. Bill was a kind, compassionate and loving man, who always gave a helping hand to anyone who needed help.

Bill will be cremated and his ashes will be returned home to Fort George, Que. He will be sadly missed by his wife and son. The family would like to thank the nurses from Saint Elizabeth for the care, kindness and support that Bill and his family received. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence, 19 Young Street, Welland, Ont. Online memories and condolences at www.jjpatterson.ca.
