Milton Equine Hospital, a premier equine surgical referral centre in Ontario, today announced that it now has two additional Board Certified Surgeons on staff, Dr. Chris Alford and Dr. Orlaith Cleary, who joined Milton Equine Hospital in the summer of 2010.

In March of 2011, Cleary and Alford received notification of passing their Board Certification examination from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Dr. Alford and Dr. Cleary join Board Certified Surgeons Dr. Marc Desjardins and Dr. Nathalie Cote, who founded Milton Equine Hospital in 2006. Dr. Cote and Dr. Desjardins are renowned equine surgeons who have been recognized as leaders in the industry for over 20 years, respectively. Having helped thousands of equine patients, both Dr. Desjardins and Dr. Cote have been recognized for their expertise through numerous speaking engagements, teaching positions at the University of Guelph and the Atlantic Veterinary College, and laboratory demonstrations. In order to keep up with their expanding caseload and to continue to provide exceptional patient care, Milton Equine Hospital has continued to hire staff in all areas of the hospital, most recently hiring Dr. Chris Alford and Dr. Orlaith Cleary. "We wish to congratulate Dr. Alford and Dr. Cleary on this huge accomplishment," said Dr. Desjardins. He continued, "We are pleased to have them join the Milton Equine Hospital team, and look forward to having both of them provide our clientele with their clinical expertise."

Dr. Chris Alford is originally from Missouri and obtained his degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri in 2006. After leaving Missouri, he completed a one-year surgical internship at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. In 2007, Alford began and completed a three-year residency in equine surgery with a concurrent master's degree at Auburn University in Alabama. Alford has focused his training on soft tissue and orthopedic surgery and has completed extensive research in colic surgery and laparoscopy, as well as wound and trauma care. Dr. Alford has lectured at meetings including the American College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Symposium, the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ Conference, and will be a featured speaker at the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association Conference in Toronto. He moved to Ontario with his wife, Liz, and daughter, Caitlin, to join the surgical team at Milton Equine Hospital in August of 2010.

Dr. Orlaith Cleary graduated with a veterinary degree from University College Dublin, Ireland, in 2003. She then completed a Large Animal Medicine and Surgery internship at the University of Georgia, followed by an Equine Medicine and Surgery internship at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala, Florida. She then worked as a resident veterinarian at Adena Springs South in Williston, Florida. She began a three-year residency in Large Animal Surgery at the University of Florida with surgical externships in private practices in Florida, Kentucky, and New Jersey, which she completed in 2009. This was followed by a clinical instructorship at the University of Florida. Her special interests are in advanced imaging (MRI, CT, scintigraphy), as well as all aspects of soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Cleary has lectured at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Dublin Ireland, the American College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Symposium, and will also speak at the upcoming Ontario Veterinary Medical Association Conference. She moved to Ontario to join the team at Milton Equine Hospital in July 2010.
