Celebrate the joys of winter with the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame. Home of one of the world’s largest compilations of Currier & Ives equine lithographs, the Museum proudly presents highlights from its collection in the current exhibition ‘Horse Drawn: The Sleighs of Currier & Ives.’
Until the early 20th century, horse-drawn sleighs were an essential means of winter travel. From the practical hauling of goods to the joy of taking part in a ‘sleighing carnival,’ the artists of the esteemed New York printing firm Currier & Ives captured it all in whimsical detail.
The festive scenes on display in the current exhibit provide a glimpse of the winter fashions of the period as well as the social and cultural significance of the horse in society of the time. Enjoy the musical singing of sleigh bells as you tour some of Currier & Ives most charming and collectible works.
Additional features of the ‘Horse-Drawn’ exhibition include a wonderful original Albany Cutter, a style of two passenger sleigh favoured by many individuals of wealth during the 19th century, and an ice racing sled built in 1878 for use on the frozen canals at Whitehall, New York.
The Harness Racing Museum is located at 240 Main Street, Goshen, New York and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday - Sunday. Thanks to the support of the United States Trotting Association the Museum is pleased to offer free admission for walk-in visitors and a $4.00 per person fee for group docent-guided tours.
