On Friday, March 24 President and CEO Dan Gall made a cheque presentation on behalf of Standardbred Canada in the amount of $2,000 to the Equine Foundation of Canada (EFC) at Tara Hills Stud Farm in Port Perry, Ont. The $2,000 represents the profits from the silent auction hosted at the 2016 O’Brien Awards Gala that took place on Saturday, January 28.
On hand to receive the cheque was Nancy Kavanagh, Secretary of the Foundation. Kavanagh will in turn present the cheque at the Foundation’s Annual General Meeting which takes place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at the end of this month.

The purpose of the Foundation is to aid in the health and welfare of the horse with its programs being unbiased as to the breed of horse or area of the country.
“We’re pleased to support the efforts of EFC,” said Gall. “The Foundation plays an important role in the equine industry, funding the purchase of new equipment and the development of important programs and services for many of the Veterinary Colleges and Institutions across the country.”
In November, 2016, EFC generously provided the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI in Charlottetown, PEI with $127,000 for state-of-the-art equipment used to diagnose and treat lameness, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal conditions in horses.
The Equine Foundation of Canada is the first charitable organization devoted to equines to be registered by Revenue Canada. It was registered February 1, 1983 by the founder George Wade of Kentville, Nova Scotia. Wade’s concern about the well being of horses was his reason for forming the Equine Foundation and he served as the president of the organization from its inception in 1983 until his passing in 1997.
The programs of the Equine Foundation at this time mainly involve providing funding to the five Canadian veterinarian universities which are:
