Change To Breeder Of The Year Criteria

Standardbred Canada’s Board of Directors would like to announce a change to the criteria for the Armstrong Breeder of the Year Award, effective with the 2021 O’Brien Awards.

The following is the eligibility criteria used since the inception of the Award in 2005:

• Breeder must be a resident of Canada.
• Earnings/wins of offspring for whom the member is the breeder of record.
• Stakes wins by offspring in a given year for whom the member is the breeder of record.
• Minimum 50 Canadian start requirement.

The updated criteria is as follows:

• Breeder must either be a resident of Canada or have a Canadian based breeding operation AND must fit one of the following criteria: A minimum of 50 per cent of their starters, in the current year, must either be Canadian-foaled or Canadian-sired OR a minimum of 5 starters, in the current year, are Canadian-foaled or Canadian-sired.
• Earnings/wins of offspring for whom the member is the breeder of record.
• Stakes wins by offspring in a given year for whom the member is the breeder of record.
• Minimum 50 Canadian start requirement.

The voters’ package will include the location of the sire for the breeders’ top performers, as well as their Canadian earnings, wins, and average earnings per starter.

Standardbred Canada’s O’Brien Award Nominating Committee determines three candidates for voters to choose from. The finalists for this award are the two candidates who receive the most votes.
