Roy To Drive At Pompano

Driver Louis-Philippe Roy was planning a brief mid-week break from harness racing south of the border, but the popularity of the O'Brien Award winner has clearly made its way to the Sunshine State and brought him back to the racetrack for a one-night only appearance.

Roy will drive at Pompano Park for the first time this Wednesday (March 13).

"Jonathan Drury and I planned to go to Florida a month ago and book a short trip here, that was only for vacation," Roy told Trot Insider on Tuesday. "Last week when the draw went out, Marie-Helene Dupont asked me if I could drive her trotter as her regular driver was committed to another horse in the race, so I accepted. The race secretary asked if I wanted to drive more horses, so I ended up being listed on seven horses."

Roy is looking forward to the opportunity to drive at the Florida five-eighths mile oval, both for a change of scenery and change of climate.

"What I’m most excited about is to drive in short sleeves again... it’s been a while!" said Roy with laugh. "It will be nice to drive at this track and hopefully I’ll be able to get my picture taken there."

A winner of two O'Brien Awards -- first as Future Star in 2016 and then as Driver of the Year in 2018 -- Roy leads all Canadian harness racing participants in Canada this year with $748,844 in purse earnings. He'll be back in Canada on Thursday at Woodbine Mohawk Park, looking to add to his career totals of 1,210 wins and more than $15.4 million banked.
