Robert ‘Bob’ Duncan Passes

Robert ‘Bob’ Duncan, who trained and drove horses at the Red Mile and Louisville Downs in the 1970s and '80s, and in more recent years drove the starting car at the Red Mile meets, passed away on Friday, February 19 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington. He was 84.

Duncan was born Jan. 21, 1932, in Lexington, the son of the late Leonard and Beulah Duncan. Bob was a 1951 Henry Clay High School graduate and a three-time all-state football player who was recruited by Ohio State. He held the rank of first sergeant in the U.S. Army, and served on the Lexington Police Department from 1958-1982 and on the Fayette County Sheriff Department.

Duncan and his colleague, the late Bill Napier, became interested in harness racing and partnered on several horses together over the years, with both training and driving.

Bob is survived by two sons, Kelly and Timothy Duncan; two grandchildren, Keri and Eyan Duncan; and two daughters-in-law, Sheri Driscoll and Mona Kreimer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva, and a son, Charles Robert Duncan. A memorial service was held at 11 am Monday, February 22, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, with interment in Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
