Swedish horseman Bo W. Takter, 84, the father of Hall of Famer Jimmy Takter, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at his home in Sweden.

Mr. Takter had been in poor health after suffering a stroke years earlier.

Mr. Takter became a dominant trainer at the Swedish tracks in Östergötland, Mantorp, Skåne and Jägersro in the late 1970s. He also won driving titles at Jägersro in 1980 and 1983.

Mr. Takter’s horsemanship skills were well known. He was regarded as a magician when it came to balancing horses and turning them into stars. He also pioneered racing horses without shoes.

According to Sweden’s Trav Ronden magazine, one such example was the horse Micko Fripé, who was put into Mr. Takter’s care shortly before the 1983 Swedish Derby. The horse won the Derby easily, with Mr. Takter waving his hand towards the sky.

In 1985, he won the prestigious Hugo Åberg’s Memorial as the trainer of Matiné, who was driven by his son, Johnny.

In addition to his sons, Mr. Takter is survived by his wife; daughters, Cathy, Cerry and Susy; and numerous grandchildren, including horsewoman Nancy Takter.
