Bernie (Chickie) William Charlton of Saint John, N.B. passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Nov. 21, 2024 at the age of 88.
Born May 21,1936, Bernie was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Florence (Power), and his sister, Marie Mahoney. He will be remembered by his surviving siblings, Gerald Charlton, Joyce Hyland and David Charlton; his children, Michael Charlton (Debbie Fraser), Linda Lund, Stephen Charlton, Suzi Charlton and Lisa McNabb, (Leonard McNabb); and his many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Everyone who knew Chickie knew he had a tremendous passion for harness racing. It was the horse, Yankee Anthem, that helped him realize his dreams as an accomplished driver. This past September, Chickie attended the Sackville Downs reunion in Truro, N.S. and was incredibly pleased to see so many old friends and acquaintances.
Growing up in Fairview, N.S., Chickie pursued hockey and baseball in which he had many great accomplishments. Later in life, he continued his interest as a spectator attending many events with his buddy, Bill Brown.
Chickie enjoyed spending time with his family and was very proud of his five children and all that they accomplished. He checked in on them regularly and had many great stories to share. His sense of humour and love for family and friends are most memorable.
Chickie greatly appreciated his caregivers from Senior Watch and they enjoyed his company. The family wishes to thank to Danielle and Bob.
A final farewell will be held in Sackville, N.S. in June. In lieu of flowers, donations to Standardbred New Start program or Kids Sports would be appreciated by the family.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Bernie Charlton.
