Longtime harness racing industry participant Edith "Lenore" Armstong of Brampton, Ont. passed away peacefully on Nov. 20, 2024 at the age of 93 after a long and happy life filled with family and friends.
Lenore is predeceased by her husband Charles, her sister Margaret (Ron) Sclater and two brothers Nelson (Allison) Armstrong and Carl Armstrong. She is survived by her sister-in-law Donna Armstrong Volpe.
She will be deeply missed by her daughters Jennifer (Peter) MacGregor, Caroline (Glen) Smith and Nancy (late John) Olvey. Cherished grandmother to Taylor (Brad), Regan (Brett), Benjamin (Nicole), Allison (Ty), Charlie, Heather, Hunter and Hayden. Loving great grandmother to 6 great grandsons, John, George, Andrew, Charlie, Walker and Leo.
Lenore was born in Snelgrove in a mud house on Highway 10. The family eventually moved across the road and lived there until she married Charles in 1960. She then moved down the road to Green Gables farm on Highway 10 and remained there until 2018 when she moved to Venvi Greenway in Brampton. Although it appeared she had a reluctance to leave the highway she did enjoy travelling with family and attending racetracks and horse shows with Charles and the girls. In later years there were special trips to the racetrack with her sister to make donations to the slot machines. Many days were spent at the farm with friends and family of all ages.
Most will never forget being called in for lunch for her specialty cheese whiz on a bun, tomatoes optional or her love of a funny obituary. One of her favorites included this joke. “A husband leaves his money in the attic… His wife gets curious one day and asks why he leaves his money in the attic. The husband replies, ‘so I can use it to pay rent in heaven.’ A few years later the husband dies, and the wife goes upstairs to see if the money is gone, and sure enough the money is where he left it. The wife says to herself, ‘I knew he should have put it in the basement.’”
The family would like to thank the staff at Greenway and the residents that welcomed her so openly. She truly enjoyed her time with them. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Visitation will take place at Ward Funeral Home - Brampton Chapel on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024 from 3-6 p.m.
Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Lenore Armstrong.
