Trot Insider has learned that Standardbred horse owner Cammie Spitzig passed away this morning (Tuesday, November 18) at the age of 84.

Spitzig, who had been battling cancer, had been out partaking in one of her passions, bingo, on Monday evening before being admitted to Bluewater Health in Sarnia overnight. She passed away a few hours later.

Spitzig, the matriarch of a well known Ontario racing family, was involved in the province’s harness racing industry for roughly 40 years. She campaigned the 2000 General Brock Series winner JN Johnny and also found success on the track with performers the likes of Traffic School, Kars Rough Velvet and Spirit Lane, to name a few.

Since Cammie’s Cancer diagnosis reared its head, her granddaughter, trainer Taylor Spitzig, has been adorning her starters in pink attire in support of her grandmother’s fight.

In addition to Taylor, Cammie is also survived by her sons, Wayne, Richard and Rusty; daughters, Brenda and Bonnie; and nephews, Bill, Dennis and Duane.

At Cammie’s request, cremation will be taking place and there will not be a visitation. She did request that anyone that wants to make a donation in her memory can do so at a local hospice for Cancer patients.

Cammie will be dearly missed in the grandstand at both Sarnia’s Hiawatha Horse Park and at Dresden Raceway.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Cammie Spitzig.
