Angelo Cardin, 66, a well-known horse agent in both the trotting and horse eventing worlds, was found dead in his hotel room in Lexington, KY on September 25. Cardin had told friends over the weekend that he wasn't feeling well, but gave no specifics about his health.
A native of Padua, Italy, Cardin was a trainer-driver in that city before moving to the U.S. to work as a horse agent. He brokered the sale of hundreds of horses over the years, including the Yonkers Trot champion Bullville Victory.
Cardin lived in Hackensack, NJ, near the Meadowlands when he was in the U.S. and not travelling. When at home, he was a regular at baby races, qualifiers, and big race nights at the Meadowlands, or whenever a trotter he wanted to see was entered to race.
"He had a very good opinion of a horse," said Art Zubrod, manager of Brittany Farms, "and he loved to see good trotters. He drove to Hoosier Park last Saturday because he wanted to see the top trotters in action there. We were supposed to have dinner in Lexington Sunday night, but he phoned me and told me he didn't feel well."
Cardin had related to some that he had been in ill health and had suffered paralysis for a short time while alone at his New York apartment. A friend stopped by and got him to a hospital. Cardin later felt well enough to check himself out of the hospital and drove to Lexington.
Cardin shared his love for life and travelling with friends on Facebook, including photos taken at many of the restaurants he frequented, particularly in Italy and New York. He was a well-known patron in some of the finest restaurants in Italy and Manhattan and if a trotting friend mentioned his name, they were often brought special, unordered dishes because of Cardin's friendship.
