In loving memory of Richard Winacott

Richard William Winacott of Peterborough, Ont. passed away peacefully on Oct. 9, 2025, surrounded by his children. He was in his 86th year.

Born on Aug. 19, 1940, in Oshawa, Ont., Richard worked for most of his career at TRS Food Services in Oshawa as a refrigeration and vending technician, servicing various venues and hockey arenas.

Richard had a lifelong love of sports. He was an avid bowler, hockey goalie and baseball player, later becoming a coach and referee for his children’s teams.

As a young man, Richard had a passion for horse racing as an owner, trainer and driver. He was brought back into the racing world when his son Mark began to build a racehorse stable. Before long, Richard -- known to many as “Butch” -- was back in full swing and loved every minute of it. He paid close attention to how each horse raced and was always ready with advice, encouragement or a simple “good job.”

Richard was well known for his quick wit, toughness, deep love for his family and, of course, his second-to-none dance moves.

He is survived by his three children, Mark (Sue), Kelly, and Lisa (Ree) and their mother, Noreen; his nine grandchildren, Laura (Tyler), Chad (Stephanie), Jenny (Brad), David, Tyler (Michelle), Brittany, Julia, Megan and Luke; and his 13 great-grandchildren. Richard is also survived by his brother, Gary (Peggy). He was predeceased by his parents, Melrose (Mike) and Velma; his sister, Joanne; and his brother, David.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, located at 471 Simcoe Street South in Oshawa, from 1-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations if wishing to do so may be made to the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Richard Winacott.
